of the Apollo program
First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important in the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.
—John F. Kennedy

This series of commemorative rocket launch flights are staged by FLARE, the Fellowship of Las Cruces Area Rocketry Enthusiasts. We will launch scale models of both Historic White Sands rocketships, and Apollo era spacecraft.

Apollo 13 commemoration
Sat. April 17th 2010
Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, Hutchinson Kansas

Amazing news! Marisa Honomichl of the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, in Hutchinson Kansas, emailed me to find out if we could perform a launch at their Apollo 13 commemoration on April 17th, 2010.

The group had decided that we not do 13 or later missions because of other planned activities this year (see NSL 2010), but it looks like our talents are in demand elsewhere.

The Apollo 13 Commemoration event is scheduled for Saturday April 17th. Surviving Apollo 13 astronauts Jim Lovell and Fred Haise as well as Apollo 13 Mission Director Gene Krantz and Apollo 12 moon-walker Alan Bean will be in attendance.

I spoke with John Palmer from the NAR Section Kansas Organization for SpaceModeling (KOSMO). He lives in Hutchinson, KS (Home of the Cosmosphere) and has agreed to work with the Cosmosphere to assess the feasibility of having an Apollo 13 launch reenactment on the museum grounds. He will be meeting with the museum's Apollo 13 Commemoration organizer Marisa Honomichl to try to come up with a good launch location and to discuss the possibility of having a combined FLARE/KOSMO static display set-up inside the museum. So far, there are 4 other KOSMO members that have expressed interest in helping out as well. My plan right now is to launch possibly 2 rockets, the Gemini Titan (Jim Lovell flew aboard Gemini) and the Saturn V. Right now it looks like I have 7 people lined up to help out. That should be more than enough for having just 2 launches. I will also get with Marisa to see if the museum can provide a PA announcer to be our stand-in for Mike Shinabery. This is going to be an awesume event!!
